Court Case!!!

Today is the day a new era has come and an important event has occurred. It is the court case of Tom vs. Mayella. Both of these witnesses will be called to the witness stand today. They will have to take the oath and swear to tell the truth. When Tom was called to the stand, Mr. Finch was the first lawyer to question him. Mr. Finch is accompanying Mr. Tom Robinson as being his lawyer. When Tom was first questioned, Atticus wanted to prove to the jury that Tom had nothing to hide, except for once incident that occurred a while ago. They started out the testimony by saying that Tom is a 25 year old colored folk, he has a wife and 3 kids and he works at for Mr. Link Deas in the field. Tom said he was acquainted with Mayella Ewell because he had to pass by her house everyday, to and from work. Tom said he would always end up doing odd jobs for Mayella, such as chopping wood, fetching water or helping her out with other chores. He said he did all these jobs for free because he felt bad for her and he knew how bad the times were. However on November 21st, something odd happened. Mayella had asked him to look at their door because it was broken. When he did, he noticed nothing out of the ordinary so he said he was going to go home. However, she then asked him to get a box for her on top of a chiffarobe. When he reached up for it, Mayella scared him because she hugged his legs very tightly. He then fell off of the chair and knocked it over. When he was on his feet, Mayella went up and kissed him! She told him that she had never kissed a grown man before, and what her father did to her didn’t count. She also said that she might as well kiss a colored-folk. Tom was scared by the way she was acting so he tried to leave, but she was clenched to him and wouldn’t let him go! All of a sudden, Bob Ewell appeared at their window and saw everything that had happened. He started shouting stuff at Mayella but Tom ran out of the house. He said he was scared because it wasn’t safe for a colored person to be in a situation like that. Atticus told the jury that Tom had nothing to hide and that his client is innocent. Tom Robinson had nothing to hide

 Robert Ewell; Guilty or Innocent?

Robert Ewell is the father of nineteen-year old, Mayella Ewell. According to his testimony, he was a witness of Tom Robinson having forceful sexual intercourse with Mayella. Is whatever Robert witness what really happened? That we do not know. Just before sundown on November 21st, Robert was on his way back from the woods when he heard Mayella’s screams. He instinctively ran to the house towards her screams, but managed to get himself caught in the fence. By the time he detangled himself and had reach the window, all Robert saw was Tom grasping Mayella. Mayella’s and Robert’s stories are similar, but Tom denied what they both had said. Who is lying? What had really happened? Atticus Finch questioned all the witnesses. Heck Tate shared with the court that Mayella was bruised on her left eye. Robert Ewell wrote his name on a piece of paper for the court, and what the court had seen was the Robert is left handed. Does Robert have anything to do with the bruise or is it just a coincidence? The only information that was shared of Robert was what he had witnessed and that he is left handed. Whoever had hurt Mayella, will be discovered and punished.

Tom Robinson Trial: Atticus Finch

Here in the Maycomb Courthouse Atticus Finch, the lawyer of the defendent Tom Robinson, questioned Mr. Heck Tate on the crime that Tom Robinson is being accused of. Atticus has been questioning in different ways to try to get different answers. He is trying to see if their are any holes in the testimonies. He seems to like to walk back and fourth in the courtroom to help him think. When he seems to have something to say he becomes quiet and says nothing. Mr. Heck Tate says that the night of the incident he was called over to the Ewell's house for help. When he got to the house, he saw Mrs. Mayella Bruised and beaten. She was crying and weapping to Mr. Heck Tate That she had been raped. She told Mr. Heck Tate that Mr. Tom Robinson was the person that had done this to her.

Week 3

The Finch Family

It seems that the Finches are the talk of the town here in Maycomb County. People have a lot to say about them and most of those things are not good! Atticus Finch is the reason for all of this trash talk on the family. Atticus is a lawyer for the case of Tom Robinson. Atticus is defending him in court because Tom Robinson has been accused of assaulting and raping Mayella Ewell. The white community of Maycomb County does not like that Atticus is defending Tom Robinson because by doing that he is saying that Mayella is lying. Mayella is a white woman and Tom Robinson is a black man so it’s her word against his. The Finch family has to face this everyday even Atticus’s children have to face teasing at school and in their neighborhood. People in Maycomb; call him a "N_____ Lover" because he is defending a black man instead of someone of his kind. The trial against Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell has not started yet but when it does start we expect it to be very crazy. Here at the Maycomb Times we believe that this will only get worse and the Finch family will have to face this because of Atticus Finch!

Week 4

The Testimony of Mayella Ewell

[Part 2]

Now it was Atticus’ turn to investigate her. It seemed as if Atticus was trying to be gentle, trying not to scare Mayella, so he walked over to the window instead of to the witness stand. Atticus tried to comfort Mayella by telling her that he won’t try to scare her and then he tried to get acquainted with her. Atticus again asks her how old she is. She answers in a very smart-remark-tone, and told him that she was 19 and she had already said that. Atticus explains to her that he’s getting older and he can’t remember things as well, so she would just have to bear with him. Her response was “Won’t answer a word you say as long as you keep mockin’ me”. Judge Taylor was aggravated by this and told her that Mr. Finch was not trying to make fun of her! Mayella considers Atticus’ politeness as being ‘sass’, such as the things he calls her like ‘ma’am’ and ‘misses’. However, being polite was just Atticus’ way and he was like that to everyone. She said she had 7 siblings, she was the oldest, and her mother was dead. She did indeed attend school for about three years and knows how to read and write, just like her father. Atticus had a pattern of questions going on. He asked questions that Mr. Gilmer wouldn’t object on and he was asking questions that built a picture of the Ewell’s life at home for the jury. From what Mayella stated; their relief checks weren’t enough to pay for anything, her father was an alcoholic, their house was filthy, they hauled water in buckets from a spring that ran out of the town dump, they hardly ever took showers, the smaller children suffered from rashes and stuff, Mayella was the only one who went to school for the whole time, none of her siblings went to school because they thought there was no need for it- with two members of the family who knew how to read and write, there was no need for the rest of them to learn. Atticus asked her if she had any friends and she seemed confused by this question, as if she didn’t even know what ‘friends’ were. Automatically Mayella thought that Atticus was making fun of her again. Mr. Finch’s next question was “Do you love your father?” She said he was nice to her except when he was drinking. Atticus then asked her if her father ever ‘went after her’ or ‘tried to beat her’, and she hesitated to answer. She finally declared that her father has never put a hand on her in her life. After painting a picture for everyone, of the Ewell’s personal life, he decided to get down to the case. He went over what she had said earlier about how she asked Tom to come over and chop up the chiffarobe. He asked her if she was familiar with him and she said yes, that he passed by the house everyday and she knew where he lived. She stated that it was the first time she had ever asked him to come inside their fence. He then asked her if she was so sure about everything else that happened, then did she remember Tom beating her in the face. She was silent and then she said “no Tom didn’t hit her in the face”, and then she said “yes he did hit me in the face”. She kept changing her answer. What was the honest answer!? Finally she said that she just didn’t remember, it all happened so quickly! Atticus asked Mayella to identify the man who raped her and she pointed at Tom Robinson. Atticus then asked her another question, “how did he rape you?” She raged and said she didn’t know how but he did! Noticing how Mayella was browbeating, Mr. Gilmer objected but Judge Taylor overruled his complaint. However, Atticus wasn’t done investigating his witness. He then asked her what she did the whole time that Tom was supposedly raping her. She said she fought back and tried to run but he had slung her to the ground by then, and got on top of her. Since her family consists of seven other little kids, Atticus then asked her if she was screaming, then why couldn’t the other children hear her. Her reply was that the kids were at the dump and her father was in the woods. Atticus was confused by this reply because the dump is closer than the woods and if she was really screaming then the kids would’ve came running home. Mr. Finch started shooting questions at Mayella but during most of these questions she was silent. He then demanded if her father was the person who really raped her, and why doesn’t she just tell the truth that Bob Ewell was the criminal. Suddenly Mayella decided to speak and said that she had only one thing to say. Atticus thought that Miss Ewell was going to tell the truth but instead she shot a stubborn remark towards him. In short, she said that Tom is the one who took advantage of her and if the cops aren’t going to do anything about it then they are just cowards. After that, she burst into real sobs and didn’t answer anymore questions. The lawyers must’ve thought it was no use trying to make her speak again so they dismissed her from the stand. It was a long day for people at the courthouse and now other witness’ are being questioned.

Week 4

The Testimony of Mayella Ewell

[Part 1]

Mayella Violet Ewell was called to the witness stand after her father. Mr. Gilmer was the first to question her. He asked her to tell the jury and congregation, in her own words, what happened on November 21st of last year. His first question was, “Where were you on dusk on that evening?” She said she was on her front porch doing nothing. Shortly, Judge Taylor was getting irritated with her one word answers and told her to just tell them what happened. Suddenly, she burst into tears! Judge Taylor tried to comfort her by telling her not to worry, there’s nothing to be afraid of and all she had to do was tell the truth. She pointed at Atticus when the Judge asked her what she was scared of. This was surprising to most people because Atticus is a really nice person and he is pretty much the same to every person. She said she didn’t want Mr. Finch to do the same to her as he had done to her father. Obviously, she must’ve taken Mr. Finch’s ‘way’ from the wrong point of view and got really defensive. The court’s order was restored and she started out by saying that she’s 19 ½. She restarted her story by stating that her and her family had a chiffarobe and her father told her to chop it up while he was gone in the woods, however she wasn’t feeling very strong that night so as Thomas Robinson passed by their house, she called him over to do it for her. She told Tom that she’d give him a nickel if he busted it for her and so he came into the yard as she had invited him. As she turned around into the house to go get him a nickel, all of a sudden he was on her. She said that he ran up behind her, grabbed her by the neck, cussed at her, and then started hitting her. After that, he slung her to the floor and started taking advantage of her. She said that she did in fact, scream and fight back as loud as she could. This questioned most people because Mayella is a pretty big girl and if she really did try her hardest to get Tom off of her, then it could’ve been done. In addition, she said she couldn’t remember too well what happened after that but next thing she knew, her father was in the room, standing over her, and asking her who did it?! Then, Mayella fainted and as she was coming back to conscious, Mr. Heck Tate was pulling her over to the water bucket. To most people, Mayella looked as if she was confident that she’d given her testimony, but there was something odd about it.

Commotion in Maycomb, Alabama

There has been reported that there has been some horrible commotion on the Maycomb county region a few days ago. It involved a mob of 50 men and one man who stood all these people up, his name Was Atticus Finch, but they refer to him as a colored folk lover! He will be defending his client Tom Robinson this Saturday at the courthouse, for the result of rape on a 19 year old woman Mayella Ewell. This man was on his porch on fine afternoon and he just saw about 50 men go on his front yard and yell his name. There was no violent action at this event and nothing got out of hand. But according to Mr. Tate he informed everyone that the Mop told the man Atticus Finch that “he has everything to lose for’ from the event coming up on Saturday. But according to Atticus he told his youngster’s children and his well known friends that he will not let these people get into his head nor will he let anything stop him from defending his client. Atticus in remaining strong even after the mop came and told him, he is still going to stand tall and go to court to defend his client will not stop until he has won.

 Week 3

Maycomb Welcomes New Citizen!

Atticus Finch’s sister, Alexandra Finch made a decision to settle down in Maycomb for a period of time. Before you made any assumptions, nothing is wrong at the Landing that caused Alexandra to come stay in Maycomb. “Aunt Alexandra is staying with my family because she’s going to teach me how to be a lady.” shares Jean Louise Finch. The people of Maycomb automatically showed how happy they are of Alexandra to become part of the community. The town of Maycomb are all familiar for one of Alexandra’s most remarkable characteristics; her faboulous cooking skills! Maudie Atinkson may have some competition now! Unfortunately for us, Alexandra’s husband nor grandchild will be joininh her. It would be nice for Maycomb to greet and welcome her entire family, but Jimmy has to take care of the Landing and young Francis has to be home with his parents. It seems as if our Maycomb population is slowly increasing. Our little may one day become a large city. Everytime another person becomes a citizen of our community, is a small contribution of Maycomb’s change into becoming a different place, or rather a different world. Whatever may happen to Maycomb, the people in it will still be the kind and gentle people we love today.

 Week 3

Finches at First Purchase

Reports of Jeremy and Jean Louise Finch being seen at First Purchase church were reported to Maycomb Times from a confidential source. On Sunday, July 6th Jeremy and Jean Louise Finch were seen with their family cook Calpurnia at the infamous First Purchase church for the blacks. People question if local town lawyer Atticus Finch is going to let his children grow up with so many black people just because he is the lawyer to Tom Robinson. The people of First Purchase welcomed with great honor the children of Atticus Finch. Problems seems to have arisen while they were there, apparently they were confronted by a church member Lula. She said to the Finches that they were not allowed in “her” church because they were white. Issues were resolved when reverend of the church, Reverend Skyes, told them to ignore Lula and they were more than welcome at First Purchase. The Finch Children were not accustomed to the ways of black churches so they were probably lost through out the entire service! Our confidential source also tells us that while in the church the children witnessed a collection of money to aid the wife and children of Tom Robinson. Jeremy and Jean Louise Finch have gotten to network with a lot of blacks. “Good, after what their daddy is doing they better get used to all the them black people” says a local town man.

 Week 3

New Citizen or Refuge?

Some of you may already know this fellow visitor of Maycomb County. His name is Charles Baker Harris, but usually goes by the nickname of 'Dill'. Well, we recently found him around town and were sort of curious because  he only really comes during the summer to visit friends and his Aunt Rachel. The story behind this event is that Dill is a refugee! He came from Meridian (where his home is) all the way to Maycomb County all alone. Why you ask? Well he told his 'room-mates' that his new step-father is a secret maniac! He kept Dill in chains, trapped in the basement, left to die. The only way that Dill kept secretly alive was by a farmer who heard his cries of help. He would pass by and feel Dill raw peas right out of the pod. The first thing that comes to mind is that this farmer is truly a life-saver! However, this story was all a lie! He got everybody all worked up and worried. The truth is that Dill felt that his parents weren't interested in him. His parent's were really nice to him and bought hime whatever he wanted- what a life. The thing that bothered Dill the most was how they were hardly ever home and when they were, they just ignored him. Personally, I don't think that this is a healthy enviroment for a kid to grow up in, so in a way it was a good thing that Dill got away. It was also a good thing that his friend Jem told his dad Atticus, and Atticus then told his parents, because otherwise Dill's mom would've been worried to death! So, the main reason Dill ran away was because he wants a family that will want him back. He knew his way around the city so he arrived here safely. He will currently be staying with his Aunt Rachel and his friends Jem, Scout and Atticus. We think that it would be fair if everybody welcomed him once again as a new citizen to Maycomb County.

Fire in Maycomb

Week 2

Last night a fire broke out in Miss Maudie's  house. Maycomb Times was informed that last night around nine fire light in Miss Maudie's house. We have been experiencing very harsh weather so this could be a fire place incident considering that a the fireplaces and chimneys in Maycomb were lit. All the men lended a hand to help this fire from growing and spreading, to avoid a huge disaster around the whole neighborhood. People like Mr. Avery, Mr. Radley, and Mr. Finch helped out carry out furniture so the fire would not ignite more. Firefighters were on their way but were delayed because their engine was frozen from the extreme cold weather conditions. Neighbors feared that the fire would spread from Miss Maudie's house to their homes. Luckily more fire engines came to the scene and put out the fire. The fire was out but it seems that Miss Maudie's house suffered a lot of damage to the point where we think that she might want to rebuild it or build a new one. We tried to interview Miss Maudie but apparently she is not in the mood to talk to the press. Lets all hope for the best and wish Miss Maudie the best of luck!

Mad Dog Rome’s The Town of Maycomb

(week 2)

Last night a mad dog roamed the peaceful town of Maycomb. It was said that this dog was known as old ‘Tim Johnson”. Old Tim was nosing trough this town, when a worried neighbor called the town Operator. This worried neighbor was Calpurnia a colored folk. She informed the Operator too call the all of the homes of Maycomb county and tell them that there is a mad dog on the loose. Old Tim was successfully shot down by the town lawyer Atticus Finch. According to Jem and Jean Louis Finch they said that they were out hunting with their new Air-guns out in the open and all of a sudden they saw Old Tim walking lopsided, and looking at everything all crazy with an evil look on his eye. Luckily for the town Atticus Finch arrived just in time with the town sheriff Mr. Tate. Atticus got Old Tim with one shot said Mr. Tate the town sheriff; he said that the dog never saw it coming. This mad dog had everybody in the County worried and it had most people lock their doors and prepare themselves with weapons and what not. Everybody in the County was suspicious because it was February and mad dogs don’t come out in the month of February! Normally for a town like Maycomb, mad dogs come around in the middle of the year not in February. This town was all worried to death because of “Old Tim Johnson” but Atticus saved the day for this peaceful town. But it looks like that this was the first mad dog in Maycomb County of the year.

 Colored Rapes Ewell!

1930

Rumor has it that a negro in Maycomb, Thomas Robinson sexually assualted Robert Ewell’s nineteen-year old daughter, Mayella Ewell! Though this may not be necessarily true, the situation is going to be taken to court to get the facts straight. One of our very own Maycomb lawyers, Atticus Finch is going to defend Thomas Robinson! Judge Taylor chose Atticus to defend Thomas personally himself. Finch defending a negro is the talk of the county.

Is Thomas guilty? Will Atticus win the case? Will people believe Thomas despite the fact he is a negro? Nobody knows yet, but we all will soon find out! Mayella Ewell is being defended by an attorney from Abbottsville, Mr. Gilmer. Most are familiar with Mr. Gilmer for always being seen in court cases taken place in Maycomb. Finch is a smart man, but so is Mr. Gilmer. The case may be a tight one. Familiar friends, and possibly strangers all over the county will be showing up for the court case. The event will be a big one! Such an incident as this one has not occurred in Maycomb. The case will be public court so the entire county is invited. Don’t miss out on something that may go down in history!

 Commotion over at the Radley's

1930

Last night I'm sure plenty of you heard about the commotion over at the Radley's house. The story is, Mr. Nathan Radley said that he heard something in this backyard. He put on a coat and hat, went outside to see what it was and to his surprise saw nothing. He had his shotgun ready incase he needed it then fired it into the air to scare the person out of his yard. He explained to us how he just wants to live in peace and how he doesn't want anybody trespassing into his house to snoop around.

One of our interviewers asked a lady named Miss Stephanie Crawford what was going on and she said she saw the whole thing. Everybody in the neigborhood heard the shotgun as it was fired into the air and ran outside to see what happened. Mr. Nathan was shouting out how someone had broken into his yard and he fired his gun to scare the living crap out of him. He sounded pretty sure that it was a negro and if anyone saw a white negro around, then he was the one who broke in. He didn't shoot the person intentionally but he threatened that next time anyone decided to break into his property, he was going to blow the head right off of them, whether it be a dog or a lady. Whoever caused all this conflict I sure hope that you don't decide to attempt this again, or who knows your fate will be. This event sure stirred up the neighborhood late in the night and scared half the people out there.

We suggest that parents keep a close eye on your kids incase they happen to be mistaken for a trespasser. We don't want anyone getting hurt purposely, or not on purpose. You heard the man, the next time he fires his shotgun someone will be without a head.

Rest in peace Mrs. Dubose

September 1930

Maycomb Times has just been informed that Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose has passed away! You could not go to town without passing her house and spotting  her on her  front porch. Even though Mrs. Dubose wasn't the kind old lady you would want her to be, she still was part of Maycomb County. Rumor has it that Mrs. Dubose  wasnt always the friendliest towards negroes and nigger-lovers (somebody who favors Negroes over and above themselves ). Mrs. Dubose's care taker Jessie, was the closest thing to family she had. Jessie would care  for Mrs Dubose, she would do things for her like cook and give her the medicine when she was ill. Besides Jessie, Jeremy and Geane louise Finch were some  of the last people to visit Mrs. Dubose before her passing. Most people felt Mrs. Dubose was a mean, unfriendly old women. We found one man who spoke of her very kindly. When interviewing Atticus Finch, we found that he may have been the only person who really understood Mrs. Dubose for who she was. He felt that she was the bravest person he ever knew. She fought a long hard battle and in the end she won. Mrs. Dubose died a free woman.

September 1930

Our city of Maycomb had just lost one of our citizens! The father of the Radley family has just passed away, may he Rest in Peace. Mr. Radley was not well known around town but he always has a nice hello or a good morning to everyone. People in Maycomb have been saying that his death by not have been for natural cause or by age but instead a murder! We interviewed local town woman "Miss Stephanie Crawford" and she said "Once Mr. Radley was hurt in the leg by his son Arthur "Boo" Radley!" "In my opinion, I think that "Boo" was not in his right state of mind and might have attempted to hurt his father once again but this time he might have been sucessful!" Local Maycomb Police Department has been investigating this case. Let’s hope for the best and see that no one is responsible for Mr. Radley's death! Maycomb, Alabama has always been a peaceful place with minor crimes and we sure do hope this is not our first crime in Maycomb and ruin our reputation as a peaceful city. We all here at The Mockingbird Times send our deepest condolences to the Radley family!

Boy Assaults Teacher!

September 1930

The first day of school the Ewell boy verbally abused the new teacher Ms. Caroline. Ms. Caroline is the newest teacher to Maycomb and on her first day of work, had a schocking encounter with one of her student's, by the name of Burris Ewell. The start of this conflict was when Ms. Caroline spotted a "cootie" crawl out of Burris' hair. She automatically froze and was shocked at the sighting of this little bug. Ms. Caroline being from Winston County, North Alabama, is not use to the living style of the Maycomb County inhabitants and obviously doesn't know the inhabitants very well. As the kids tried to comfort her, the boys tried to find what had scared her. They all thought it was a rat and scavenged the classroom for the rodent. When they discovered that it was just a cootie, they tried to calm her down and tell her to not fret over it. She finally settled down and proposed her help to the student by searching her books for a remedy that would clean this child's scalp and hair until it was fresh and clean. However, in return of her thoughtfulness, Burris stood up and told her in front of the whole class that he was leaving and that he had done his time for the year. She was puzzled by his announcement and the kids once again had to let her in on the news. The class explained to her that the Ewell's could be found all over the school, but they only come on the very first day and then leave for the rest of the school year. They wait for the beginning of every next semester to come around so they can make their usual appearance and disappearance. When she tried to convince Burris to stay, his patience turned to anger and then he let her have it. He refused to sit down and then grew even angrier. He made his way to the entrance/ exit and then started shouting irrational things such as "you snot-nosed slut of a school teacher" and "you ain't making me go nowhere" towards his teacher. By the time he was gone, she was surely crying. This kid sure has a mouth for being so young. Well, lets hope that the rest of the school year for Ms. Caroline goes splendid with very few, or no, conflicts.

New Form of Education

September 1930

A new form of education has been brought to Maycomb from Winston County! One of our new first grade teachers, Caroline Fisher, has brought us a new teaching method. This method is called the Dewey Decimal System. Caroline says that this method was taught all over her college campus up in Northern Alabama! “The technique is very simple. You show the class a word printed on a card. It is basically visual, self-taught learning.” Caroline shares with Maycomb Times. What she means by this is that the idea of the system is for the child to develop the meaning of the word printed on the card in their mind. We interviewed several children from Caroline’s class and this is what they had to say, “Miss Caroline will show us a card for a couple seconds, then show another. Each card she shows us, I try to pronounce in my head.” This new technique may take some time for the children to adjust to, but it appears the system is already starting to have an affect on them. Hopefully, students will grow into liking this new learning technique. According to teachers, the Dewey Decimal System should be school wide by next year!
